AirPower

Where is AirPower? 6 months on…

The charging mat from Apple that just never came to fruition. I say “never came to fruition” rather than “has so far never come into fruition” because the AirPower charging mat becomes less likely to release with every coming day. Unveiled alongside iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, the device was expected to launch “early 2018”. Shortly after the event, Apple posted an advert on YouTube showing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The ad showed off AirPower and also mentioned “early 2018” as the release date.

I can confirm that we are now 6 months into the year, and there is still no sign of AirPower. No teaser. No mention. Nothing. In fact, it’s hard to believe that AirPower is still even being worked on. Sure, the device isn’t essential and Apple never required you to use AirPower to charge you’re iPhone 8, 8 Plus or X wirelessly, however, it still feels pretty stupid that the device is now 9 months behind schedule. In fact, why didn’t Apple just wait until this year to announce it?

I can’t speak for Apple myself, but if I worked for them I’d assume that the best way to show your new iPhone’s wireless charging functionality in a TV ad is to also show your new charging mat. That’s all fine, it’s perfectly okay to show unfinished products in an ad, alongside finished products. But what about “early 2018”? We are now in June 2018. And guess what Apple, if you didn’t realise already, it’s no longer early 2018. In fact, it’s getting later every month. We’re almost three-quarters of the way through the year, and the device still hasn’t arrived. So what on earth is happening?

Polishing. Probably. But it’s not an excuse to mislead us all by promising the device will arrive in “early 2018” when it looks like it won’t even launch until September. There have been rumors in the past suggesting that the AirPower mat might not have received FCC clearance yet. Potentially due to the fact that it overheats when all three devices – the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods – are charging.
