AppleInsider has now reported that Apple may be looking into putting the new Apple TV app on older devices like the Apple TV third generation.
On Monday, Apple did unveil the new Apple TV app that will eventually have Apple TV Channels and the new Apple TV+ streaming service.
As of Wednesday, the betas for the new software for Apple TV software 7.3 became available, which brings the Apple TV app to the Apple TV third generation. This can only be accessible to developers and has not been officially released to the public at this time.
The new Apple TV app on the Apple TV third generation
The company is additionally opening up the new Apple TV app and Apple TV+ to other smart TVs like Samsung, Vizio, LG and Sony smart TVs, as well as smart TV devices like Roku products and Amazon’s Fire TV devices.
Apple did discontinue the Apple TV third generation in October 2016, so it is somewhat surprising for them to allow for that older device to use the new Apple TV app and Apple TV+.
However, Apple does still update the Apple Events app on the Apple TV third generation, so I guess we should not see it as too much of a surprise. This is just something we would expect to see only available for the Apple TV HD and above.
