9to5Mac has reported that Apple could be enabling QR code payments in the Apple Wallet app, according to source code in iOS 14.
What it could mean is stores such as Target and Walmart that have QR code and barcode-based payment methods, that people using that feature in the Wallet app will be able to pay using their card of choice and pay for their items with Apple Pay.
Stores like Target do accept Apple Pay in both its stores and app, but the problem has come from other companies like Walmart that do not accept Apple Pay at all.
Instead, Walmart has its own mobile payment method called “Walmart Pay” where users of it add their credit/debit card to their Walmart account, open the Walmart Pay feature of the Walmart app and scan the QR code at the self-checkout out or card reader at a traditional retail line.
Apple did not show this reported feature of Apple Pay off at WWDC this year, but we could see it possible when the public beta of iOS 14 is released sometime this month. If this is a feature that is true, we should see it when iOS 14 is officially released this fall.
