It has been a big year for Apple Pay because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the best new merchant of the year might be here before 2021.
According to a recent post on Reddit, a user has reported that their Dollar General store has begun to accept contactless and NFC-based payment methods such as Apple Pay.
I just used contactless at Dollar General!

The user also posted a picture of their receipt from their purchase that does say that their payment method was a “contactless” one.
This is a big deal this year because Dollar General previously announced on Twitter that it was going to get Apple Pay in its stores, but later retracted the tweet.
In its stores, the company does have Ingenico Lane/7000 card readers which are the same ones used at Best Buy stores and do have a spot on them for NFC payment features. At Dollar General, the NFC function has always been turned off.
It’s also important to note that Dollar General’s competitor Dollar Tree started accepting Apple Pay and other NFC-based contactless payments methods earlier this year in the beginning months of the pandemic.
If it is true that Dollar General is accepting Apple Pay in its stores, Apple Card users would get 2% in Daily Cash by making purchases from their iPhone or Apple Watch. It would additionally make it so Apple Pay users could use their Apple Cash there as well.
In the meantime, if you do come across a Dollar General card reader that is accepting Apple Pay/NFC-based payment methods, let us know on Twitter at @appleosophy.
