We reported last week that the state of Ohio got support for Wallet app integration for its state IDs and drivers licenses. California appears to be actively looking to add support for it too.
Now it appears as though two more states are in the works to get support for mobile IDs, which are Iowa and Tennessee, according to 9to5Mac.
“A source tells 9to5Mac that both Iowa and Tennessee are actively developing support for IDs in Apple Wallet. Tennessee reached its agreement with Apple to support the feature last summer, according to a person familiar with the feature’s development. Iowa reached its agreement prior to Tennessee, another source added.”
Right now, Iowa has its own digital system for residents having their state ID and drivers licenses called Iowa Mobile ID.
Tennessee has said to be working on its own digital ID system, but that has not been released to the public yet. ABC 24 states that the program is in its “final steps.”
Obviously we do not have an official release date for when Iowa or Tennessee will officially launch this support for mobile IDs in the Wallet app, but we can hope it will be done before the end of the summer this year or early into the fall.
By having your state ID and/or drivers license in the Wallet app, it can be used in select states at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, as well as “select businesses and venues.”
