Apple this week has announced that Japan’s My Number Card can now be added to the Wallet app for iPhone XS models and newer running iOS 18.5 or later.
The My Number Card is Japan’s national identification card system. It includes a unique 12-digit individual number assigned to all residents of Japan, including foreign residents. This card serves as an official form of identification and is used for various administrative procedures, such as taxation, social security, and disaster countermeasures.
The card can be integrated into the Wallet app via the most recent version of the Mynaportal app. Once added, the digital card can be presented in person or within apps where digital acceptance is supported.
As of today, Apple confirms that the My Number Card on iPhone can be utilized for printing official documents at convenience stores throughout Japan and for accessing the Mynaportal to receive online government services. Future plans include enabling users to present their My Number Card on iPhone at hospitals and pharmacies across Japan.
Japan is the first country outside of the United States to support the Wallet app’s ID feature. Apple estimates that approximately 100 million people in Japan currently possess a My Number Card. Additional information is available on the Digital Agency’s website.
