The college football season has started once again and even though we have a complete guide to how you can stream games live overall this year, streaming games in 4K is both niche but also getting better.
To start the first big weekend of college football this year, Apple TV 4K users will have the opportunity to stream not one, but FOUR games this weekend in 4K.
Here are the following games:
- Auburn vs. Baylor – 8 p.m. ET on Friday, August 29, on FOX
- Texas vs. Ohio State – 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 30, on FOX
- New Mexico vs. Michigan – 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 30, on NBC & Peacock
- Notre Dame vs. Miami (Florida) – 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 31, on ESPN 4K
For it just being the first weekend of the college football season, this is not a bad number of 4K-eligible games at all.
As for how you can stream them, the two games on FOX will be available to stream in 4K via the FOX Sports app. You will need to sign-in with valid TV provider credentials in order to get access to the 4K stream.
If that is not an option, you can also subscribe to and stream it from the new FOX One streaming service that launched last week. After a one-week free trial, the service costs $19.99 a month.
Some live TV streaming services like FuboTV, Sling TV (on the Sling Blue plan), and YouTube TV do provide access to the official FOX 4K channel for sporting events like this. However, those with YouTube TV would have to pay the additional $9.99 a month for the 4K Plus add-on.
When it comes to streaming the NBC game in 4K, that information comes from TVAnswerman who states, “The NBC broadcast will be upscaled to 4K on DIRECTV and YouTube TV, meaning it will be produced in 1080p HD and upscaled to the higher format for home delivery.”
Peacock users can stream the game in 4K too as long as they have the $10.99 a month Premium plan.
Lastly, we have the game on ESPN 4K. The game itself will be on regular ABC stations and affiliates and being broadcast in HD. However, users that have YouTube TV, Sling TV, and other services will get access to the 4K stream of that game directly in their respective apps and websites.
It is not currently known if the game’s 4K stream will be available through the new $29.99 a month ESPN streaming service that launched last week alongside FOX One too.
For the FOX, NBC, and ESPN college football games, all of these will be in upscaled from 1080p HD to UHD 4K.
Again, TVAnswerman clearly specifies this:
“While upscaled 4K is not regarded as precise or vivid as native 4K (4K on-site production; 4K cameras; and 4K transmission to the home), it can deliver a more colorful and clear picture than a regular HD image.”
All of the services mentioned above are available to stream on the Apple TV 4K.
