Apple’s push into AI continues to evolve, and the latest spotlight is on how developers are leveraging the Foundation Models Framework to bring intelligent features to everyday apps. Integrated with Apple Intelligence, this framework lets third-party developers tap into a powerful on-device language model, creating experiences that feel personal and seamless—all while keeping user data private.

Apple’s recent newsroom post highlights real-world examples of apps already putting this technology to work across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26. At its core, the Foundation Models Framework connects apps to Apple Intelligence’s 3 billion parameter on-device model. Key features include guided generation for consistent AI outputs and tool calling, where the model can pull in extra data to refine its responses.

Here’s a look at some highlights:

  • Health and Fitness Apps: SmartGym turns casual workout descriptions into full routines, complete with reps and equipment swaps, while offering progress summaries and motivational tips. Stoic generates tailored journaling prompts from your entries, keeping everything private on-device.
  • Education Apps: CellWalk explains biology concepts conversationally, adjusting to your knowledge level. Grammo dives into grammar mistakes with custom questions.
  • Creativity and Productivity Apps: Stuff organizes notes from voice or scans into tasks, VLLO suggests video edits like music and stickers based on content.

By keeping AI inference local, user information—like workout logs or journal entries—never leaves your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This framework is available on any device that supports Apple Intelligence. Keep in mind, not all features are available everywhere yet, so it’s worth checking Apple’s support site for specifics.

Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, summed it up well: “We’re excited to see developers around the world already bringing privacy-protected intelligence features into their apps. The in-app experiences they’re creating are expansive and creative, showing just how much opportunity the Foundation Models framework opens up.”
