Apple is hitting pause on its Vision Pro overhaul to focus on what it sees as the next big thing: smart glasses. According to a report from Bloomberg, the company is reallocating staff from its next-gen headset project toward accelerating development of glasses that could compete directly with Meta’s popular Ray-Ban line.
For a long time, Apple’s roadmap centered on refining the $3,499 Vision Pro, including plans for a lighter, more affordable model, code-named N100, slated for 2027. But insiders say that plan is now shelved. Instead, Apple is fast-tracking work on glasses, a category many in Silicon Valley believe could one day replace the smartphone.
Apple is working on two versions:
-
Glasses that pair with an iPhone but lack a built-in display. Apple could show these off as soon as next year, with a launch targeted for 2027.
-
Display-equipped model – a more advanced version that could rival Meta’s new Ray-Ban Display. Initially planned for 2028, Apple is now trying to bring this forward.
Meta has a big head start. It launched the Ray-Ban Stories in 2021 and followed up with the Ray-Ban Meta in 2023 — a surprise hit that blended style with tech. Just last month, Meta refreshed its lineup with better cameras, longer battery life, and sportier designs. Apple, by contrast, has struggled to position the Vision Pro. While technically impressive, the headset has been criticized as bulky, pricey, and short on content.
A rebuilt Siri, possibly debuting as early as March, is expected to power the glasses alongside other devices like smart speakers and displays. The glasses themselves are rumored to include speakers, cameras, voice controls, and even potential health-tracking features, running on a new Apple-designed chip.
Apple isn’t alone in chasing this next wave of AI-driven hardware. Amazon and Google are exploring their own takes on connected devices, while OpenAI is working with ex-Apple design chief Jony Ive on futuristic gadgets. Still, Apple’s move to prioritize glasses signals a recognition of where the market may be headed.
