Apple has removed the ICEBlock app from its App Store, reported by Fox Business. The decision came after the Department of Justice (DOJ) raised alarms about the app’s potential to put law enforcement officers at risk. The DOJ, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, contacted the Cupertino giant on Thursday, demanding the app’s takedown. ICEBlock allows users to anonymously report the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Bondi stated that the app crosses an “intolerable red line” by risking violence against law enforcement. She emphasized the DOJ’s commitment to protecting federal officers who safeguard communities daily. The controversy escalated following a deadly shooting last month at an ICE office in Dallas, Texas. The suspect reportedly used tracking apps like ICEBlock before the attack, which killed one detainee and critically injured two others—one of whom later died.

Apple confirmed the removal in a statement, explaining that the App Store aims to be a “safe and trusted place.” Based on law enforcement input about safety risks, the company also pulled similar apps. This aligns with Apple’s strict review processes, which prioritize user safety and compliance with laws.

ICEBlock’s developer, Joshua Aaron, expressed deep disappointment, calling Apple’s action a capitulation to an “authoritarian regime.” He insists the app doesn’t harm officers and compares it to benign features in Apple’s own Maps service, where users share real-time data. With over 1.1 million users, Aaron vows to fight the decision. His mission, he says, is to shield communities from what he views as oppressive immigration tactics under the current administration.
