Apple announces new iPad Pro with M5 chip and more

Apple today announced the new iPad Pro with M5 chip, a significant update to its professional tablet line, featuring the newly developed M5 chip, along with the custom-designed C1X modem and N1 wireless chip. The new models are available for pre-order immediately and will be in stores starting Wednesday, October 22.

The new iPad Pro leverages the M5 chip to deliver exceptional performance and a major leap in on-device Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities.

  • M5 Processor Details: The M5 chip features up to a 10-core CPU, configured with four performance cores and six efficiency cores, which Apple states contains the “world’s fastest performance core”. Its advanced GPU includes a Neural Accelerator in each core and a third-generation ray-tracing engine, resulting in up to 45% higher graphics performance compared to the previous M4 chip.
  • AI Acceleration: The new silicon delivers AI performance that is up to 3.5 times faster than the M4-equipped iPad Pro and up to 5.6 times faster than the M1 model. This accelerated AI performance, enabled by a faster 16-core Neural Engine, is designed to enhance demanding AI workflows, such as on-device generative image creation and advanced video processing in professional applications.
  • Memory and Storage: The architecture now offers 153GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, marking a nearly 30% increase over the prior generation. Additionally, the new iPad Pro provides up to 2x faster storage read and write speeds, and the base 256GB and 512GB configurations now start with 12GB of unified memory, representing a 50% increase in starting memory.

The new iPad Pro includes multiple hardware and power enhancements designed to improve professional workflows and user experience.

  • Wireless Technology: Integrated is the new N1 chip, an Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity. This improves connectivity performance on 5GHz networks and enhances the reliability of features like AirDrop and Personal Hotspot.
  • Cellular Modem: Cellular models feature Apple’s custom-designed C1X modem, delivering up to 50% faster cellular data performance and an improved efficiency that results in up to a 30% reduction in power usage during mobile data activity.
  • Display Capabilities and Charging: For professional users, the device gains the ability to support external displays at up to 120Hz and introduces Adaptive Sync to lower display latency. Furthermore, the new iPad Pro now supports fast charging, capable of reaching a 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes when utilizing a 40W or higher USB-C power adapter.

The M5 iPad Pro, available in 11-inch (starting at $999) and 13-inch (starting at $1,299) models. The new models are available for pre-order immediately and will be in stores starting Wednesday, October 22.
