iPhone Air 2 Not Delayed, Says Gurman; Focus is on 2nm Chip

Recent reports have suggested that the second-generation iPhone Air has been postponed until 2027. The speculation cited poor sales and a potential redesign to add a second rear camera as reasons for the schedule change. However, according to Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, this narrative is flawed. The device was reportedly never scheduled for a 2026 release, meaning it cannot be “delayed.”

Gurman’s reasoning is based on Apple’s intentional naming strategy. By designating the device as the “iPhone Air”—rather than tying it to a specific generation like the “iPhone 17 Air”—Apple signaled that the product exists outside its standard annual release schedule. This precedent suggests the device will be updated based on technological readiness, not a yearly calendar.

The primary focus for the next-generation iPhone Air is not a major external redesign. Instead, Gurman reports the main upgrade will be the transition to a 2-nanometer chip. This engineering focus is intended to address the most significant drawback of the first-generation model: its battery life. A more efficient and powerful processor is the logical solution.

Regarding rumors of a second, ultrawide camera, Gurman expresses skepticism. He notes the phone’s “plateau” area is already constrained. A complete redesign to incorporate the least-used iPhone camera would be a substantial engineering effort for a low-volume device. He posits the only scenario where this becomes plausible is if a dual-camera design from Apple’s foldable iPhone program eventually trickles down.

Gurman states the iPhone Air is “essentially a technology exercise and a prototype en route to the foldable iPhone.” This strategy is not about acclimating consumers to thinner form factors. Instead, it is about preparing Apple’s supply chain. The iPhone Air provides a crucial testbed for Apple to refine the materials, miniaturization techniques, internal components, and software optimizations that will be critical for its eventual, and far more complex, foldable smartphone.
