OpenAI is officially bringing advertisements to ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers. In a major strategic shift announced yesterday, the company revealed it will begin testing sponsored content within its flagship AI platform. While users have long enjoyed an ad-free experience, the rising costs of maintaining world-class AI models have led the company to explore a new “freemium” model.
The most notable addition to the lineup is ChatGPT Go, a new entry-level subscription priced at $8 per month in the US. This tier is designed to bridge the gap between the heavily restricted free version and the $20 Plus plan. For a fraction of the cost, Go users get roughly 10 times more usage than free accounts, including access to the new GPT-5.2 Instant model.
However, there is a trade-off for the lower price: ads are now part of the experience. OpenAI plans to display these advertisements at the bottom of chat responses. The ads are designed to be contextually relevant to your conversation. For example, if you ask for travel recommendations in San Francisco, you might see a sponsored link for a local hotel. This format mirrors how modern search engines operate, integrating discovery directly into the user’s workflow.
Despite the introduction of ads, OpenAI is emphasizing a “user-first” privacy approach. The company has explicitly stated that your private conversations will not be shared with advertisers. Furthermore, OpenAI promises that sponsored content will never influence the actual answers the AI provides. To maintain trust, all ads will be clearly labeled as “Sponsored” and kept visually distinct from the AI’s organic output.
For those who find any form of advertising a dealbreaker, the Plus, Pro, and Enterprise tiers will remain entirely ad-free. This ensures that power users and professionals can continue their work without interruption.
