It looks like the wait for a Studio Display refresh might finally be coming to an end. While we’ve known for a while that Apple is developing a second generation of its premium monitor, new evidence suggests we might actually be getting two distinct models instead of just one. Internal Apple system files, recently analyzed by Macworld, have uncovered a split strategy for the next iteration of the Studio Display.
Until recently, most rumors focused on a single codename: J527. This model has long been associated with massive upgrades like 120Hz ProMotion and HDR support. However, references to a second model, J427, have now surfaced in the macOS 26.3 code, confirming that Apple is testing two separate hardware configurations. A deep dive into the firmware reveals that these aren’t just minor revisions. The two models feature different audio drivers and I/O (input/output) controller configurations.
Both the J427 and J527 models are expected to share the core features that the current Studio Display lacks. This includes ProMotion, which provides that buttery-smooth 120Hz scrolling we love on the MacBook Pro, the iPad Pro, and the iPhones. The real divergence appears in the audio and connectivity department. The J527 model reportedly supports more I/O controllers, implying it may feature faster Thunderbolt ports or additional expansion options. Furthermore, the audio drivers for J527 are more complex, leading to speculation that it could pack a speaker system closer to the HomePod in terms of acoustic performance.
Perhaps the most interesting detail found in the files is the internal labeling. The J427 version is tagged as a “2025” product, while the J527 is labeled for “2026.” This could indicate a staggered release or a late-stage pivot in Apple’s development timeline. While the files don’t explicitly state screen sizes, the math adds up for a two-size lineup. It wouldn’t make much sense for Apple to sell two 27-inch monitors with only slight variations in speakers. Instead, we’re likely looking at a standard 27-inch model (J427) and a more premium 32-inch Pro model (J527) that bridges the gap between the Studio Display and the ultra-expensive Pro Display XDR.
