Google today launched a native Mac App for its AI Tool Gemini, joining other macOS apps for Artificial Intelligence, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft’s Copilot, and more. This was long overdue, as Gemini users either had to use the website or the web app through the browser to access it.

With today’s launch, users can finally access Gemini in a more efficient and productive way on their Mac, as it introduces key new features.

Firstly, the Gemini App on Mac supports Keyboard shortcuts (Option + Space). This combination will launch a quick chat, although it may also launch ChatGPT and Claude if you have the same keyboard shortcut set to launch those as well. Need to launch the full app quickly? Users can press Option + Shift + Space to open a full chat window. Gemini can also be launched via a shortcut in the Dock or by clicking the Gemini icon in the Menu Bar.

With the app, users can also share a window or their screen to Gemini for better context and can receive answers based on the content shared in the chat. During the initial setup, this would require users to allow certain permissions in Settings. To share your window, simply clock on the ‘+’ icon and select ‘Share window’

As shared by Google,

Here’s what you can do with the Gemini app:

  • Get quick answers: Instantly ask questions and get information without opening a browser.
  • Draft content: Generate ideas, write emails, craft documents, or create engaging social media posts.
  • Summarize information: Quickly get the main points from long articles, web pages, or documents.
  • Brainstorm ideas: Use Gemini as a creative partner to explore new concepts and generate innovative solutions.
  • Get coding help: Write code, debug, or understand complex programming concepts in various languages.
  • Analyze images: Upload images and ask Gemini questions about them, or use them to spark new ideas.”

What do you need to install the Gemini App on your Mac?

  • A Mac running macOS Sequoia 15 or later
  • 8 GB of RAM or more
  • 200MB of Free Disk Space for Installation
  • A stable internet connection as the app still needs to access its servers for Gemini features

Gemini is free to use, although users with paid Google AI Pro plans get the benefit of higher limits.
