Anthropic released a Claude iPhone update this week that finally brings CarPlay support to the app, as reported by MacRumors, closing a gap that stood out among the major AI companies until now.
Apple expanded support to conversational apps on CarPlay with iOS 26.4, and chatbot apps have steadily filled that space ever since. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok arrived first, followed by Meta AI just a few days ago. Claude rounds out the list as the latest addition, and Siri AI is expected to join the lineup once iOS 27 launches later this month, following its current beta testing period.
Getting a chatbot onto CarPlay isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Apple requires these apps to build a dedicated voice control screen, follow Apple’s specific CarPlay template, and receive an entitlement directly from Apple before they’re allowed in. Claude fits that mold now too, and drivers can talk to it hands-free through their car’s infotainment system.
Opening the Claude app on CarPlay brings up a straightforward screen prompting users to start a hands-free conversation. From there, drivers can jump into a brand-new chat or pick up a previous one from their recent history. The interface also includes simple controls for muting or unmuting, along with visual indicators that show whether Claude is actively listening or responding.
There are limits worth knowing about too. Claude can answer questions and hold a voice conversation, but it can’t control anything related to the vehicle itself or the iPhone connected to it. Drivers also need to manually open the Claude app from CarPlay’s interface first, since Apple doesn’t currently allow third-party apps to respond to their own custom wake words.
Apple has always kept a tight leash on which third-party apps get CarPlay access, largely to avoid adding distractions behind the wheel. That said, the chatbot category keeps growing steadily. OpenAI brought ChatGPT to CarPlay earlier this year, and with Claude, Meta AI, Perplexity, and Grok all now available too, drivers have more voice assistant options in the car than ever before.
