Officially, Apple’s answer is no. As per the report from John Gruber at Daring Fireball, Apple confirmed that iPhone 17 Pro cases aren’t technically compatible with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and the reverse doesn’t work either, at least according to the company itself.
The culprit is tiny. Apple made the camera plateau on the new Pro models just slightly thicker this generation, one-tenth of a millimeter thicker, to be exact. Gruber measured it at 11.5mm versus 11.4mm on last year’s models. That’s an almost invisible difference on paper, small enough that you’d never notice it just holding the phone. Still, it’s apparently enough for Apple to draw an official line between the two generations, which conveniently nudges people toward buying a fresh case alongside their new phone.
Here’s where things get more interesting, though. Gruber didn’t just take Apple’s word for it; he actually tested this himself. His iPhone 17 Pro cases slipped right onto the iPhone 18 Pro without any issue. Same story in reverse: iPhone 18 Pro cases fit perfectly fine on the older iPhone 17 Pro too. So despite what Apple’s official compatibility chart might suggest, both generations of Apple’s own cases appear to work interchangeably in the real world.
Third-party cases should mostly hold up the same way. A tenth of a millimeter just isn’t much room for a case to fail to accommodate, especially with how much flex most silicone and TPU cases already have built in. That said, don’t expect a perfect track record across every single case out there. Somewhere in the sea of third-party options, there’s bound to be one or two designs tight enough around the camera area to actually run into trouble with that extra sliver of thickness. Those cases are far more likely to be the exception than anything close to the rule, though.
So if you’ve still got last year’s case lying around and you’re hesitant to spend more money right after buying a new phone, there’s a good chance it’ll just work. Worth trying before assuming you need to buy anything new.
