Apple Pay is now supported by one of Japan’s used payment wallet Line Pay, which is associated with the Line messaging app. Line Pay is a mobile wallet service popularly used in Japan in 1.21 million stores across the Asian country.
Line Pay announced today that users can now make daily payments of goods with Apple Pay with or without the Line App. It will also support scanning by NFC, and QR codes, as well as the user’s own right from the Apple Pay screen. The company stated in a press release:
LINE Pay Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-Ku, Tokyo, CEO: Hisahiro Nagafuku, hereafter: our company) is using the mobile money transfer and payment service “LINE Pay” developed on the communication app “LINE”. We are pleased to inform you that we will start supporting “Apple Pay” from today.
Users can quickly and easily set up “Apple Pay” from the “LINE” app, and “iPhone” and “Apple Watch” can be used on “iD” terminals installed in more than 1.21 million stores in Japan (as of September 2020). You can pay with the same “LINE Pay” balance as QR code payment just by double-clicking and holding it over.
Line users can now set up Apple Pay on the Line app in the Line Pay section, then tapping on the Apple Pay button, this will issue a virtual “Visa Line Pay Prepaid Card” that will be used to do transactions online.
Apple Pay has been in Japan since 2016 and supported in 100 card issuers and banks. The service has been expanding recently with Walmart began supporting it in Canada last month, and other gas stations such as Costco, and ExxonMobil.
