Finally, since 2012 the iMac has been stuck with the same design without anything fresh, until now.

In Apple‘s first major event today, the tech giant has unveiled the new 2021 iMac, which has a 24-inch 4.5K display and a major spec bump: M1.

The design of the iMac has been changed from curvy to square-flat just like the iPad Pro and iPhone 12 but the front chin is still big, M1 is also included, making the iMac the third Mac product to distance itself from its Intel-based siblings. The new iMac is 11.5mm thin and the company is saying that it will stay quiet and cool thanks to the M1 chip.

iMac now comes in seven new colors: red, green, blue, yellow, purple, orange, and silver with a new Magic Keyboard ”“ which now supports Touch ID ”“ and Magic Trackpad with the same colors to match. The power cable is magnetic ”“ though not branded as MagSafe ”“ and is connected to the back with the ability to also connect an Ethernet cable.

The baseline iMac starts at $1,299 which includes 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM but excludes some colors ”“ like purple or yellow ”“ that is reserved for the higher-end models. The highest-end iMac comes with 512GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, and two USB 3 ports plus all the other features of the baseline model and is priced at $1,699.

With M1, Apple’s new iMac is the next major step in Cupertino’s Silicon transition which will eventually dominate all Mac computers. Also at the event, the new 2021 iPad Pro has joined the transition.
