Apple has been reportedly said to not be moving on with plans for a new fourth-generation iPhone SE that was said to be released in 2024.
In a recent article posted on Medium, Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple leaker, stated the company’s plans to abandon the project altogether. It was also said that Apple was planning on making said iPhone SE the first one with Apple’s new in-house 5G cellular chip, but Apple will instead be continuing its deal with Qualcomm for 5G cellular chips in new releases of the iPhone, which would include the iPhone 16 set of smartphones.
“Due to concerns that the performance of the in-house baseband chip may not be up to par with Qualcomm’s, Apple initially planned to launch its baseband chip in 2024 and let the low-end iPhone SE 4 adopt it first, and decide whether to let the iPhone 16 use its baseband chip depending on the development status of iPhone SE 4,” Kuo said. “However, the cancelation of the iPhone SE 4 has significantly increased the chances of Qualcomm remaining the exclusive supplier of baseband chips for the 2H24 new iPhone 16 series, which is better than the market consensus that Qualcomm will start losing iPhone orders in 2024.”
In the meantime, Apple did release a new iPhone SE just last year that does have support for 5G connectivity and the Qualcomm Snapdragon X57 modem for said 5G connectivity.
