Gurman: Tim Cook not likely to Step Down in Early 2026

Apple Reports Larger-Than-Expected $97.3B in Q2 2022 Results
Tim Cook

Tim Cook turned 65 this month, marking a milestone that inevitably turns the conversation toward retirement. However, a recent clash of reports has caused quite a stir regarding when that transition will actually happen. According to the latest edition of the Power On newsletter by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the reality of the situation is quite different from recent sensational headlines. While succession planning is actively underway, you shouldn’t expect a new CEO in the immediate future.

For some time now, the spotlight has been fixed on John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. The logic behind Ternus as the top pick is sound. He is the youngest member of the executive team, offering the longest potential runway to lead the company. He oversees the hardware division—the very heart of Apple’s product lineup—and is highly regarded by both Cook and other senior leadership. While other candidates exist, the internal spotlight on Ternus has only intensified.

The conversation heated up recently when the Financial Times published a report claiming that Tim Cook is expected to step down between late January and June of next year. The report suggested that Apple is intensifying its succession planning to meet this deadline. However, Gurman’s reporting flatly contradicts this timeline. He characterizes the Financial Times story as false, noting that it was likely not a “test balloon” for Wall Street, but simply inaccurate reporting.

Currently, there are a few internal signs that he is preparing to hand over the baton immediately. Gurman notes that it is widely believed within Apple that Cook still loves the job. Even when he eventually relinquishes the CEO title, he is expected to remain involved as chairman.

While the CEO role seems stable for now, other shifts are happening. Gurman notes that Apple’s silicon chief, Johny Srouji, is currently evaluating his future at the company. Additionally, Apple is actively hunting for a new leader to spearhead its Artificial Intelligence efforts.
