First Impressions: Walmart Pay

Avatar for David Becker

Due to some recent events in my life, I am trying to stay away from using the built-in chip on my debit card. Luckily for me, most of the places that I go to accept Apple Pay now, so it is not a huge issue.

However, one of the stores that I go to sometimes is Walmart and I believe my information on my old debit card got tampered the last time I was there, so I was trying to figure out a way to be able to still go there and pay for my items without using my debit card or cash. Then, it hit me: Walmart Pay.

With Walmart Pay, I am able to pay for my items directly from my iPhone 8 Plus via the camera on the rear and the QR code on the monitor or card reader screen.

One of the things that I love about using Apple Pay on my iPhone is that it works by using a fingerprint. This was something that I was skeptical of with Walmart Pay since it does work with a QR code scanning via your camera.

Later on, I did learn that Walmart Pay can’t be accessed unless you use Touch ID on your iPhone and/or type in your four-digit code. This makes it more secure so that if someone were to get ahold of your iPhone, they wouldn’t be able to access your account without either your fingerprint or four-digit code.

With all of that said, being the small-budgeted college student I am, I made a small purchase at my local Walmart. For those interested in what I got, it was a bottle of Mountain Dew Baja Blast.

I went and did this all at a self-checkout register. I scanned my item, tapped the area to pay, hit the Walmart Pay icon on the register screen, opened the Walmart Pay section in the Walmart app, scanned the code and the transaction was over and paid for. Meanwhile, all of that took about 20-30 seconds to do!

Overall, in my brief time with using Walmart Pay, it seems to be able to do the job and do it securely. Another cool item with it is that the cash register does not print out a receipt. Instead, a digital receipt is saved to your Walmart account. This way, you still have it and the company is saving on paper.

I plan to do a full review of Walmart Pay once I have used it more. Until then, stay tuned here to see when that review becomes available.
