Opinion: The Best Streaming Service for the 2017 MLB Season

Avatar for David Becker

Baseball season has started again for the MLB and with that comes the variety of channels that will be broadcasting it. But what is the best streaming service quality and for the price? For this article, I will be showing plans for Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and DirecTV Now.

Sling TV: Although the service does have the cheapest prices for their two plans (Sling Orange and Sling Blue), you get what you pay for. Even on Sling’s most expensive plan at $25 a month, baseball fans will get FS1, FS2, FOX (in select areas), regional FSN, regional CSN, and TBS. With all of that said, that’s a good amount of baseball and baseball coverage, but as you can see, you don’t get ESPN networks. ESPN can be acquired through the Sling Orange plan, but you would lose all of the FOX Sports and NBC Sports networks.

PlayStation Vue: It gets better with Vue. On Vue’s cheapest plan, users can get ESPN, ESPN 2, FS1, FS2, and TBS, which goes for $29.99 on their Access Slim plan. However, I think the Core Slim plan for $34.99 is going to be your best bet. On that plan, users have access to all of the channels previously listed, but also FSN regional networks, ESPNews, and MLB Network. The other two remaining plans don’t add much in regards to sports networks.

DirecTV Now: To make a long story short, a user would have to pay at least $50 a month to get both FS1, FS2, and MLB Network. DirecTV Now, according to their website, the service does not get the regional FSN stations.

PlayStation Vue and DirecTV Now both have access to the FOX Sports GO app, which would allow for users to watch one or multiple games at once (Apple TV exclusive). The can allow for a user to watch four sporting events at once and have support for Picture-in-Picture.

Based on the facts listed here, I believe that your best bet is PlayStation Vue’s $34.99 Core Slim plan. It’s all the baseball you could want and then some!
