Trump has proposed a tariff increase on China that would negatively affect the price of certain Apple products. On Friday Apple said that the proposed tariffs of $200 billion would end up raising some of the prices of their products including the Apple Watch, Mac Mini, AirPods, Apple Pencil, and adapters and chargers.
Trump has recently responded in a tweet where he said that the tariffs could raise the price of Apple products but also gave a “simple solution” that would result in no tax at all. He recommended that Apple start building plants and move production of Apple products to the United States instead of China. Trump tweeted:
Apple prices may increase because of the massive Tariffs we may be imposing on China – but there is an easy solution where there would be ZERO tax, and indeed a tax incentive. Make your products in the United States instead of China. Start building new plants now. Exciting! #MAGA
Apple has said that this increase would mean that consumers would end up paying more for these products instead of the usual prices that they are used too and expect.
In the past Tim Cook has talked about one of the major reasons why Apple has not moved its factories to the United States. He talked about how China is more than just cheap labour but that they also have valued skills and high-end sophisticated equipment that end up making high quality products which is something that Apple values highly.
Apple has not announced any plans on moving the production of it’s products to the United States as of yet.
