Starting with iPhone 7, Apple begins to use both Qualcomm and Intel modems on its smartphone lineups, however, as the performance gap between the two modems began to become apparent, it always seemed Qualcomm’s modems are far better than Intel’s. What’s worse is that in the latest iPhone XS and XS Max models, Apple fully embraced Intel’s cellular modems. But, if you still have an older iPhone like the 7 or the X, you sure can check whether your device is powered by an Qualcomm modem or not.
- Go to your iPhone Home Screen
- Tap on the Phone app
- Enter *3001#12345#*
- Press the green Dial button
- If the “Field Test” is displayed at the top of the page, it has the Qualcomm modem, and if it is “Main Menu”, then it uses the Intel modem.
Fortunately, Apple will no longer employ Intel modems, as the company aquired the chipmaker’s smartphone modem unit, and plans to develop its in-house cellular chips. Until then, Apple will use cellular modems from Qualcomm.
