If you’re wearing a mask, you may have noticed that Face ID may fail because the face is covered.
iOS 13.5 Developer Beta 3 was released today, and it has a feature which helps you unlock your iPhone easier & faster. When Face ID fails and your iPhone detects that you are wearing a mask, it takes you directly to the passcode input screen upon swiping up. With earlier versions of iOS, if Face ID would fail, you would have to swipe up, and it will scan your Face once again, and then eventually show the passcode input page. Your iPhone will unlock will take a longer amount of time to unlock because this elongated process.
Apple has decided to skip these steps, and now iOS 13.5 Developer beta 3 directly takes you to the passcode screen upon swiping up once Face ID fails and it recognises that you’re wearing a mask.
iOS 13.5 is expected to release to the public in Mid-May, which will help you unlock your iPhone faster & easier while you’re wearing a mask.
As pointed out by @Sonikku_a2, if you’re wearing a mask, iOS 13.5 goes straight to the passcode screen if you try to unlock with Face ID (keypad not shown because iOS hides it in screen recordings) pic.twitter.com/bQCzu5u20p
