In a statement released by Walmart Canada today, it says that the company will be accepting “tap-and-pay” at its checkouts.
Tap-and-pay is simply another way of saying contactless payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
Walmart has yet to accept Apple Pay in its stores in the U.S., which has been rumored for months. However, could be releasing a way to pay for items with QR codes with Apple Pay in iOS 14, which is expected to be released sometime this fall.
Right now, the only way for U.S. Walmart customers to pay with a mobile payment in its stores is to pay with Walmart Pay in the Walmart app.
Horacio Barbeito, president and CEO of Walmart Canada, said this in a statement today:
“Millions of customers choose to shop with us in-store and online every day, and that’s a tremendous honour,” Barbeito said. “Today’s significant investment will position us for future growth and make Walmart Canada even better for our associates and our customers. We are doubling down on our focus on the customer experience, not just to keep up but to lead and to be the very best in Canada.”
It is unknown when Walmart Canada will be launching contactless payment functionality in its stores or whether or not these plans will expand to the U.S.
