Ever since Apple introduced the first-generation iPhone in January 2007, the company’s product strategy has been explicit: Design a high-end smartphone in which the user experience is more important than making a slew of features available. The iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone to have mobile Web, email, and touch-screen user interface capabilities, but it was designed to offer an improved experience compared to other smartphones. Gadget geeks world-over, wait with bated breath for every new iPhone launch.

A key part of buying an iPhone is its superior software and fantastic processors. Instead of jumping into quad cameras or more run-of-the mill features, they gracefully leverage the familiar and this is one of the reasons they continue to reign as the technology leader in the smartphone space. It is no wonder then, why they lay emphasis on the processor which is the cornerstone of the phone performance.

Understanding the Smartphone processor

Your smartphone processor, also known as chipset, is a component that controls everything going on in your smartphone and ensures it functions correctly. You can compare it to the brain of the human body. Every action you perform on your smartphone goes straight to the processor.

The speed at which a processor processes a certain action depends on a number of factors, like the number of processor cores. The clock speed is another important aspect. Processors with low clock speeds and (sometimes) a smaller number of processor cores work more slowly than processors with high clock speeds and a large number of processor cores. Take for instance the iPhone XR which comes at an attractive price-point however has been a true performance differentiator owing to its hexa-core A12 Bionic SoC (The A12 Bionic chip has been awarded as Apple’s innovation of the year in 2018.)

What helps iPhone processors stay ahead of the curve?

Apple makes their own processor, unlike other smartphone manufacturers who purchase them from Qualcomm or Mediatek. Naturally, this gives them the added advantage of designing this from scratch and not compromising due to cost. These processors are specifically tailor-made for the iphones and the lead time that goes into its extensive designing is humongous.

The iPhone 11 series consist of highly-improved technological features with the latest A13 Bionic Chipset and is considered to be one of the best phone to buy including. With two machine learning accelerators to six CPU cores, Apple claims that the A13 Bionic is the best machine learning platform available on any smartphone so far.

For the past several years, Apple’s chip has been competing by itself in terms of fast processors and each upgrade is superior to its predecessor. For example, The A13  in iPhone 11 are 20 percent faster than the A12 used in iPhone XR while using 40 percent less power, and can reach one trillion operations per second. The A13 Bionic uses the same eight-core neural engine design as the A12 but is up to 20 percent faster and uses 15 percent less power. The A13 is also believed to significantly outperform the Snapdragon 855 and Kirin 980 and is at least two years ahead of other Android smartphones in the race for fast processors

And this also justifies the difference in pricing of the iPhone 11 which is priced at Rs 64,900  as compared to the iPhone XR price of Rs 49,900 which not only boasts of a better A13 bionic SOC but upgraded IP68 water resistance (can survive in 2 meters for water for 30 minutes) and the dual camera setup.

To conclude:

Ignorance about a smartphone processor and inability to look beyond the fancy specs could turn out to be a costly mistake in the long-run. If we talk about processors, the iPhone processors are undisputedly the best-in-class and will continue to be a source of competitive advantage.
