Opinion: Should Apple release a new iPod Touch?

MacRumors recently reported that it has now been at least 1,000 days since the last time Apple released a new generation of the iPod Touch.

Now that we are in 2022, the question is whether or not Apple should continue on with releasing a new version of it this year or next year, or if Apple should get rid of it altogether?

I think I can speak for a lot of us Apple customers that the iPod and iPod Touch were the first devices that let us into the world of Apple and iOS. In fact, the iPod Touch fourth generation was my first device that enabled me to get into the world of iOS.

Fast-forwarding almost a whole decade, I’ve used the iPod Touch fourth and fifth generations, as well as use the iPhone 4S, iPhone 6, iPhone 8 Plus and am currently using the iPhone 12 Mini.

It is with that backstory that says what the iPod Touch currently is; it is a product to get young people hooked on Apple and iOS, and that’s not a bad thing.

Other devices like an iPad Mini or 10.2-inch iPad might be a little too much for some kids. The screens are much larger and could be an issue for kids if the screens are to get cracked. This is not to say that the screen of an iPod Touch could not get cracked by a kid, but I do believe that with its small size and form factor, you could make the argument that it is better for a kid than an iPad.

The iPod Touch not only acts as a music-playing device, but can be a small device for a kid to use for surfing the web and familiarizing themselves with it, playing games, watching videos on YouTube and social media, and all done from a handheld device.

And as mentioned earlier, a device like the iPod Touch could be a great and cheap way to get kids into the Apple product system. Acquiring an iPod Touch could have them later on down the road get an iPad or a Mac.

So yes, I would say that Apple should put its resources together and create a brand new iPod Touch. Not just the same body and form factor, but perhaps a slight screen size increase, better cameras on the rear and front, and then an obvious update in its processor and storage.
