Apple announced today that it has launched support for Tap to Pay in France.

What Tap to Pay does is it allows merchants, small and large, to use their iPhone as a POS system and accept payments from customers using their iPhone or Apple Watch via Apple Pay and Apple Card, as well as being able to accept contactless physical credit and debit cards.

There are several financial institutions in France that will be supporting Tap to Pay which are the “BPCE Group (Banques Populaires, Caisses d’Epargne and Payplug) and the companies Adyen, myPOS, Revolut, SumUp, Viva Wallet and World,” according to Apple.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said that it will be great for the people of France to have access to Tap to Pay.

“We are very excited to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone to merchants throughout France, so that they have a simple, secure and confidential way to accept contactless payments while benefiting from the power, security and usability of the iPhone,” she said. “With more than 90% of bank cards in France equipped with contactless technology, and the increasing adoption of contactless payments, merchants will be able to accept payments from their customers with a simple gesture on their iPhone. ”

Along with it being launched at Apple Stores in Frances, other retailers there have also begun to support and accept it, with some other businesses planning to accept it a little later.

Those businesses would be “Christian Dior Couture, belonging to the LVMH group, Dyson, Rituals and Sézane. The Addition has integrated Tap to Pay on iPhone into its cashing system used by thousands of restaurants in France. Sephora, which is also part of the LVMH group, will deploy Tap to Pay on iPhone in the coming weeks in its stores in France.”

In order to use Tap to Pay on an iPhone, the person must be using an iPhone XS or newer. It is also recommended to be on iOS 16 or iOS 17 on the iPhone being used.
