There have been a lot of changes to streaming content in 2023 and it will change a little more in early 2024 for Prime Video users.

Starting on Monday, January 29, Prime Video will be getting limited ads. Amazon also stated that it will be trying to provide ads but not have as many as traditional linear and cable TV.

Prime Video itself currently costs $8.99 a month which is assumed to be the version of Prime Video that gets these limited ads. To avoid getting the ads, you will have to pay an additional $2.99 a month to get ad-free Prime Video.

Please note that the ad-supported tier of Prime Video will still be separate from Amazon Freevee which has movies and TV shows available for completely free as long as you watch the ads and works similar to other ad-supported streaming services like Tubi and Pluto TV.

Amazon has sent out an email to its Amazon Prime and Prime Video customers that states the changes coming and why they are being done.

“We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month.”

Prime Video is the exclusive home to original content on Prime Video such as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” which just ended earlier in 2023, “The Devil’s Hour,” and “Good Omens.”

Additionally, Prime Video is the exclusive home of the NFL’s Thursday Night Football which is commentated each week by Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit.

Prime Video can be purchased through in-app purchases via the App Store for the same $8.99 a month and is available to stream on the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac. It is unknown if and when Amazon will add an ad-free tier to its Prime Video app in the App Store.
