According to Economic Daily News, the upcoming iPhone 16 is expected to boast a ‘significantly’ upgraded Neural Engine to enhance its Artificial Intelligence capabilities for iOS 18. This enhancement is part of Apple’s next-generation A18 and M4 chips, which are rumored to include a substantial increase in core count. The improved Neural Engine is set to boost performance for AI and machine learning tasks, with iOS 18 speculated to introduce new generative AI features across Siri, Shortcuts, Messages, and Apple Music. Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the company’s work on generative AI, promising more details later in the year. The A18 series chips, along with the new features, are anticipated to debut with the iPhone 16 models in September, following an announcement at Apple’s WWDC in June.

The evolution of the Neural Engine has been consistent, with core counts increasing from 2 in the iPhone 8 series to 16 in the iPhone 12 through iPhone 15 models. Despite the stable core count in recent models, the performance of the Neural engine has continued to improve, as seen with the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 chip, which is up to twice as fast as its predecessor. The Mac lineup has also benefited from the Neural Engine, with most models featuring a 16-core version, except for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, which can be configured with a 32-core Neural Engine.
