As Apple officially announced WWDC 2024 earlier this week, we can all look forward to seeing what Apple has in store for the next version of its mobile operating system – iOS 18.

One of the biggest apps in iOS 18 is Maps, and we’ve used it a lot to help us get to places and even make travel plans. Nicolás Álvarez, who has been discovering lines and references of code in beta software releases, has a new report on what Apple may bring for its Maps app.

The first one is custom route creation. Currently, Maps suggests several routes for users to pick one, so this upcoming feature will give iPhone users the flexibility to set up specific routes that work well with their itineraries.

Secondly, topographic maps on watchOS will be making their way to iOS 18. That feature was first introduced in watchOS 10, and it was essential for hikers looking for trails. Here’s a description from Apple about this feature:

Apple Maps displays a new topographic map featuring contour lines, hill shading, elevation details, and points of interest. Users can also search for nearby trails and trailheads, with place cards that include detailed information, like trail length, type, and difficulty.

These are the two new features that have been reported today, and we can expect more features to be rumored in the coming months leading up to the summer. iOS 18 will certainly be announced at WWDC 24, followed by a public release later this fall.
