As Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is expected to be largely similar to the current iPhone 15 lineup, there’s a bit to look forward to what Apple is planning for next year’s iPhone 17 lineup.
According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17 models will bring several improvements and design changes across the board.
First, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will retain the titanium design; however, the smaller iPhone 17 Pro will switch from the titanium design to a less premium aluminum design. Additionally, both sizes of the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro will feature an aluminum design that is “more complex,” which could mean a sturdier design that will be less prone to bends or dents.
Second, while the majority of the iPhone 17 lineup will retain the current Dynamic Island design, only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a smaller Dynamic Island, which will be made possible thanks to the “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor.
Third, the standard iPhone 17 model is expected to feature 8GB RAM and either an A18 or A19 chip. On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro models will come equipped with 12GB RAM and an A19 Pro chip. Currently, the standard iPhone 15 comes with 6GB of RAM, and the iPhone 15 Pro comes with 8GB of RAM. We’re expecting all models of the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup to have the same amount of RAM in both the standard and Pro models.
Last, but not least, the biggest surprise from the report is that Apple will replace the larger “Plus” model with a “Slim” model starting with the iPhone 17 lineup. Introducing a new model with a “slim design” will be quite an interesting move for Apple in marketing; however, it remains to be seen what this model will offer as the report provides no further details on that. I hope Apple will market this larger iPhone 17 as the “iPhone 17 Air” as Apple has offered both the iPad Air and MacBook Air that sit below their respective Pro counterparts.
So Pu expects the iPhone 17 lineup to consist of the following:
- iPhone 17 (6.1-inch)
- iPhone 17 “Slim” (6.6-inch)
- iPhone 17 Pro (6.3-inch)
- iPhone 17 Pro Max (6.9-inch)
We expect Apple to introduce the iPhone 16 line this September with the introduction of the iPhone 17 lineup the year after.
