Last year, Apple debuted both the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, and the larger of the two took photography capabilities to the next level as it introduced the 5x optical zoom that was made possible thanks to the tetraprism periscope camera that Apple built into the 15 Pro Max. This would give the most optimal image quality when taking zoomed-in photos. However, the smaller 15 Pro remained at up to 3x optical zoom, which is the same as its predecessor – the 14 Pro.
Now, DigiTimes reports once again that Apple plans to make the periscope camera standard on both of its upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models. This means that the new feature will trickle its way down to the smaller model for the first time. The source says that Taiwanese lens manufacturers Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical will be the primary suppliers for the upcoming phone’s camera components.
In the past, Apple sometimes made new camera features and improvements exclusive to its top-of-the-line larger flagship model before they made their way to next year’s smaller model. For instance, the iPhone 12 Pro Max featured sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and that feature became standard on both the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.
We expect Apple to debut all iPhone 16 models in about two months at Apple’s annual fall media event with a public release of iOS 18 shortly after.
