Apple has announced today that support for California residents being able to add their state ID and drivers license to their Wallet app on the iPhone is coming soon.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said it is great for Apple to provide something like this to Californians.
“We’re excited to be working with the state of California to bring IDs in Apple Wallet to Apple’s home state soon, and provide residents with an easy, secure, and private way to present their California driver’s license and state ID in person and in app using Apple Wallet,” she said. “Whether using IDs in Apple Wallet to breeze through travel, or to securely verify age or identity at businesses, California driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet make ID presentment seamless ”” all with the security built into iPhone and Apple Watch.”
Once added to the Wallet app, users will be able to access their California state ID or drivers license directly from their iPhone or Apple Watch. Additionally, they can “present their ID in person at select TSA security checkpoints and businesses, as well as in select apps to verify their age or identity.”
We have reported previously on this topic as well. On top of that, there have been talks that residents in Iowa and Tennessee could be able to add their state IDs and drivers licenses to the Wallet app too. However, no official announcement from Apple or either of those states has been said yet for a specific launch.
Other states that currently have support for this are Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio.
