Over this past weekend, Texas-based grocery retailer H-E-B launched support for contactless payment methods in its gourmet Central Market grocery store locations.
By supporting contactless payment methods, it does mean Apple Pay will work as a form of payment at these stores. For the longest time, H-E-B has been a firm holdout against Apple Pay and other contactless payment methods, similar to Walmart and Home Depot.
H-E-B Public Affairs Manager Johnny Mojica spoke with NPR’s KUT News in Austin, Texas, and stated the following in an email regarding the upgrade.
“While we hope to offer these tap-to-pay services at more stores in the future, currently, there are no other plans to share at this time.”
The source also reported “the company hopes to eventually roll out the service at regular H-E-B stores, but it isn’t sharing details on when that will happen yet.”
