It’s safe to say that the iPhones have one of the best cameras in the smartphone industry. In fact, we’ve seen even more celebrities and creative professionals use the iPhone as their main camera such as Olivia Rodrigo’s “get him back!” music video. Apple always steps up its game when it comes to upgrading the camera specs for its iPhone models, and the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup will be no exception. So AppleInsider now reports that both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models will receive a wide range of solid improvements in camera capabilities. So buckle up because this will be an extensive list of what we can expect for the next generation of iPhones:

  • The iPhone 16’s main camera will remain unchanged from the iPhone 15 with a 48-megapixel sensor and an f/1.6 aperture, and it will not likely be upgraded until 2026 at the earliest.
  • However, the iPhone 16’s ultra-wide camera will get an f/2.2 aperture, an improvement over the f/2.4 aperture on the iPhone 15.
  • Macro photography will trickle down to the iPhone 16 models, bringing that feature to the regular iPhone models for the first time.
  • The iPhone 16 Pro’s main camera will remain unchanged with a 48-megapixel count and an f/1.78 aperture.
  • Both iPhone 16 Pro models will come with a 5x tetraprism telephoto camera introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • The ultra-wide camera on both the iPhone 16 Pro models will have a major boost in megapixels from 12- to 48-megapixels along with an improved f/2.2 aperture to also support 48-megapixel ProRaw photography.
  • Apple will debut a new image format dubbed “JPEG-XL”, sitting alongside existing formats: HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw, and ProRAW Max.
  • Both iPhone 16 Pro models will have a new slow-motion option of shooting 3K video at 120 FPS with Dolby Vision.
  • All four iPhone 16 models will introduce the dedicated “Capture” button, specifically for use with various camera apps. This capacitive Capture button will offer force-sensitivity and swipe gestures to perform specific actions, and developers will take advantage of the upcoming APIs to work with their apps.

We expect Apple to introduce the iPhone 16 lineup as soon as next month with an official invite to its event to be announced as soon as next week. The major features we can expect are the Action button, the redesigned rear camera array for the regular models, and the larger display sizes for the Pro models. We can also expect iOS 18 and new Apple Watch models to launch next month.
