Appleosophy Streaming Picks: October 2024

Avatar for David Becker

Tis the season for Halloween and the spooky season overall! On top of that, it will be a big month for sports fans too, so let’s get it all in here now.

TV:

  • “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage”: This is a spin-off of the hit TV series “Young Sheldon” that just ended this year. The show will cover and highlight Sheldon’s older brother Georgie as he and his wife Mandy will be going through the daily life of living at her parents’ house and also raising their baby daughter Cece. The first episode will premiere at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 17 on CBS, and available the day after on Paramount+.

  • “Ghosts”: Sort of fitting with the theme of this month, but the fourth season of this popular series will premiere at 8:30 p.m. ET Thursday, October 17 on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ the day after. The three previous seasons of the show are also available to stream on Paramount+ too.

  • “The Office”: This show has some pretty good Halloween episodes and can take you back to the old traditional fall TV days when TV shows had 20-25 episodes a season. The series can be streamed on Peacock.

  • Abbot Elementary”: The fourth season of this show will premiere at 9:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 9, on ABC and streaming the day after on Hulu. All other previous seasons of the show can be streamed on Hulu and MAX.

  • “Doctor Who”: Once again, with the science fiction, monsters, and creatures all across space and time, this can be a great TV show to stream this time of the year. Seasons 1-13 of “New Who” (2005-2022) can be streamed on MAX, season one of the newest series of the show is available exclusively on Disney+, and “Classic Doctor Who” (1963-1989) is available to stream on Britbox and for free on Tubi.

Movies:

  • “Harry Potter”: Due to the recent death of Maggie Smith who played Professor McGonagall in all eight films, we will once again be recommending readers to stream “Harry Potter” this month. On top of that, McGonagall is seen in the second and third “Fantastic Beasts” films (played by Fiona Glascott). All of the “Harry Potter”and “Fantastic Beasts” movies can be streamed on MAX.

  • “Hocus Pocus”: With Halloween coming later this month, it is literally the perfect time to stream both the original “Hocus Pocus” film and the sequel. Both movies are available to stream on Disney+.

  • “Coraline”: While an odd film to some, it does have quite the special following to it and can be streamed for free with ads on The Roku Channel.

  • “The Nightmare Before Christmas”: Yes, this is a Halloween film despite it having “Christmas” in the title. It is a classic for Halloween fanatics out there and can be streamed on Disney+.

  • “Zombieland”: I have personally seen this one and can tell you that it is a great film overall with a climactic ending too. It can be streamed on Netflix. Its sequel “Zombieland: Double Tap” can be streamed on Hulu.

Halloween Specials: We’re doing a dedicated section this month just for Halloween TV specials that are common and popular for this time of the year.

  • “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”: Apple owns the rights to the “Charlie Brown” Peanuts specials and will have a free weekend later this month to stream the Peanuts Halloween special. However, outside of that weekend, it is available to stream exclusively on Apple TV+.

  • “Family Guy” Halloween Special: For the first time ever, there will be a “Family Guy” Halloween special that will not be airing on FOX. Instead, it will premiere exclusively on Hulu on Monday, October 14.

Sports:

  • Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina (College Football): It may not sound like the best matchup out there, but could be a good ACC Conference matchup at this part in the season for both teams. The game will be played at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 5, on ESPN 2.

  • Jets vs. Vikings (NFL): As part of the NFL’s games in Europe, this game will be played in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The game itself will start at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, October 6, only on NFL Network.

  • Cowboys vs. Steelers (NFL): Both franchises have historic histories within the league and another game will be played between the two of them. This game will be played at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 6, on NBC and streaming live on Peacock.

  • 2024 MLB Playoffs: At this time, the information regarding who will play who is up in the air, but the games will be played between ABC, ESPN, FOX, FS1, and TBS, with select games streaming live on MAX with the B/R Sports add-on.

  • Straight Talk Wireless 400 (NASCAR Cup Series): The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs are getting more intense by the week, with this race leading up to the final two races of the season. This race will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 27, on NBC.

  • Cowboys vs. 49ers (NFL): Assuming you watched the NASCAR race mentioned above live that day, you can stream that night’s NFL Sunday Night Football game that looks to be a good one between two major NFC opponents. The game will be played at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 27, on NBC and streaming live on Peacock.
