A few weeks after the launch of the iPhone 16 lineup, Apple has been pushing out a plethora of TV ads that promote the latest features of the iPhone 16 models. This ad emphasizes the new ability to record 4K 120fps (frames per second) video in stunning Dolby Vision. This new capability is made possible thanks to the A18 Pro chip on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The video showcases several slow-motion shots in several areas around the globe with the tagline “Hollywood in your pocket.” in the end, declaring the iPhone 16 Pro as the “ultimate portable camera” to take with you to film your best shots wherever you are.
Slow-motion video recording was introduced in the iPhone 5s back in 2013, and it started with recording at 120fps. On the iPhone 6, it was expanded with a 240fps option. On the iPhone 6s, the resolution for 120fps video recording was increased to 1080p. On the iPhone 8, the resolution for 240fps video recording was increased to 1080p. Since then, the slow-motion video capabilities remained unchanged until the iPhone 16 Pro. So the iPhone 16 Pro models mark the first time those capabilities were improved.
The videography capabilities are greatly improved in both hardware/software for the iPhone 16 Pro. You can now pause video recording or record video while playing music from your iPhone via the Camera app. The Camera Control gives you great control in perfecting your shot for your video. Finally, you can change the frame rate in the Photos app and even edit video sound via Audio Mix for greater post-processing flexibility.
Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are available in stores today.
