Tesla has announced that starting later this month, owners can use their Apple Watch as a digital key for their cars. This integration with the Apple Watch ecosystem marks a significant upgrade in convenience for Tesla owners, encapsulating several key functionalities directly onto their wrists.
The upcoming watchOS app will allow users to not only lock and unlock their vehicles with a simple tap but also to access the trunk and frunk remotely. Additionally, owners will be able to check their car’s battery status, ensuring they are always aware of their vehicle’s charge level without needing to pull out their smartphone. Climate control settings can also be adjusted from the watch, providing an extra layer of comfort by allowing users to set the perfect cabin temperature before they even step into their car.
Until now, Tesla owners who were keen on using smartwatches for these functions had to depend on third-party applications like Watch for Tesla, which often come with their own set of limitations and compatibility issues. With Tesla’s official app, these features will be more seamlessly integrated, enhancing user experience and reliability.
The update is designed to be user-friendly; Tesla will automatically install the Apple Watch version for users who update the companion app on their iPhones as the new version becomes available. Unfortunately, for those using Wear OS devices, there is currently no announced timeline for a similar app, leaving them to continue using third-party solutions or wait for further announcements from Tesla.
This digital key feature is part of Tesla’s broader annual holiday update, which also includes significant enhancements like improved access to Sentry Mode recordings. Sentry Mode, which acts as a surveillance system for the vehicle when parked, will now be easier to manage on the go. Furthermore, the update promises advancements in navigation, potentially offering more accurate route planning and real-time traffic updates, making the driving experience smoother and more enjoyable.
This move by Tesla not only enhances the integration between their vehicles and popular tech gadgets but also underscores their commitment to continuous improvement in user experience through software updates. As Tesla continues to innovate, it’s clear that the synergy between automotive technology and personal devices will only deepen, offering owners more control and convenience right from their wrist.
