Today, Apple launched Release Candidate (RC) versions of iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, macOS Sequoia 15.5, watchOS 11.5, tvOS 18.5, and visionOS 2.5. These updates, available to developers and public beta testers, emphasize bug fixes and performance improvements, with a public release expected soon.

iOS 18.5 and iPadOS 18.5 introduce carrier-provided cellular satellite connectivity for all iPhone 13 models (iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max), enabling texting and calling in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage when supported by carriers like T-Mobile (via Starlink), au, One NZ, or Verizon. This complements Apple’s Globalstar-based satellite features on iPhone 14 and later, like Emergency SOS. Users need a compatible carrier plan and must be outdoors with a clear sky view, as connections may take 30 seconds to over a minute depending on foliage or obstructions. The feature, initially rumored for iPhone 13 in 2021, leverages the Qualcomm X60 chip but requires iOS 18.5 for activation. Other additions include enhanced parental notifications and new wallpapers. macOS 15.5 refines Interactive Widgets and Game Mode, while watchOS 11.5, tvOS 18.5, and visionOS 2.5 optimize ecosystem performance.

Beta testers can access updates via Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone/iPad or System Settings on Mac, through developer.apple.com or beta.apple.com.
