Apple’s recent postponement of its advanced Siri capabilities has generated significant internal discussion and underscored the company’s position in the artificial intelligence landscape. While public attention has focused on the delayed integration of personal data, such as retrieving files from messages or constructing itineraries from emails and maps, the more transformative development may be the enhanced App Intents framework. This framework is designed to enable Siri to serve as a comprehensive voice-controlled interface for applications, fulfilling a long-standing objective since Siri’s introduction over a decade ago.

According to Mark Gurman in the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, the enhanced App Intents could allow Siri to perform tasks such as finding specific images, applying edits, and sharing them; posting comments on social media platforms; navigating e-commerce interfaces; and managing logins without manual input. If implemented effectively, these capabilities would enhance usability, particularly in hands-free scenarios, and improve accessibility. Moreover, the feature is integral to Apple’s upcoming hardware initiatives, including a smart display planned for next year and a subsequent tabletop robot. Without robust voice control, these devices risk underperforming compared to competitors from Amazon and Google. The Siri delays have already caused a one-year postponement of the smart display launch.

Apple has prioritized testing and refinement of this feature through its global data operations team, which evaluates AI outputs for accuracy and identifies areas for improvement. The company aims to release the capability in spring 2026, coinciding with a major Siri update, potentially in iOS 26.4. However, internal concerns remain regarding app compatibility and reliability, particularly in sensitive domains such as health and finance. To mitigate risks, Apple may impose restrictions or exclude certain categories altogether. Testing is currently underway with third-party applications, including Uber, AllTrails, Threads, Temu, Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, and select games, alongside Apple’s own apps.
