Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce its own AI-driven web search tool integrated into Siri. This development, detailed in a recent report by Mark Gurman, positions the company to compete directly with heavyweights like OpenAI and Perplexity. As Apple continues to bolster its AI capabilities, this could mark a significant evolution for Siri, long criticized for lagging behind in the AI race.

According to Gurman, the new system—internally codenamed “World Knowledge Answers”—is slated for a spring release next year. It will form part of a broader Siri overhaul that’s been in the works for some time. The tool aims to transform Siri into a comprehensive “answer engine,” allowing users to query information from across the internet using large language models (LLMs), the same tech powering generative AI like ChatGPT.

The interface is expected to incorporate text, photos, videos, and even local points of interest, making responses more dynamic and useful. An AI-powered summarization feature will reportedly make results quicker to digest and more accurate than Siri’s current offerings, which often defer to Google or external AI for complex queries.

Apple isn’t going it entirely alone. The company has struck a formal agreement with Google to test and evaluate a Google-developed AI model for powering the voice assistant. This partnership builds on their longstanding collaboration, where Google remains the default search engine on Apple devices— a deal recently upheld by a US judge with minor adjustments.

The plans extend beyond Siri. Gurman notes discussions about integrating the technology into Safari and Spotlight, potentially enhancing web browsing and on-device searches across iOS and macOS. If these plans come to fruition, Apple’s AI search tool could redefine user expectations for intelligent assistants. As the company pushes forward with Apple Intelligence features, this positions Siri as a formidable rival in the AI landscape.
