Doosan Tesna, a key player in system semiconductor post-process testing, has announced a significant investment of approximately KRW 171.383 billion (around $124 million) to acquire advanced testing equipment, as reported by South Korean news outlet The Elec. The could be a strategic step to support Samsung Electronics’ expanding production of image sensors (CIS) for Apple’s iPhone 18, slated for release in 2027.
Samsung Electronics, which accounts for over 90% of Doosan Tesna’s sales, is a dominant force in the foundry and system LSI markets. Samsung’s new CIS production line in Austin, Texas, is reportedly dedicated to producing image sensors for the iPhone 18, marking its re-entry into Apple’s supply chain after nearly a decade.
The equipment, sourced from Japan-based Advantest, Semes, and Interaction, is set to be delivered sequentially from 2026 through March 2027. A Doosan Tesna official stated, “The machinery will be delivered based on a flexible schedule, adjusted through discussions, with funding secured through internal reserves and financial loans.” .
Historically, Apple relied on Sony for its iPhone image sensors. However, supply chain disruptions between 2023 and 2024 prompted Apple to diversify its suppliers, selecting Samsung as a key partner. This shift requires rigorous quality verification, as Samsung’s sensors must meet Apple’s exacting standards. Doosan Tesna’s investment in advanced testing equipment is likely aimed at ensuring these standards are met, enhancing yield rates and production stability.
As Samsung ramps up its CIS production for Apple, Doosan Tesna’s equipment investment positions it as a critical partner in ensuring quality and scalability. The sequential delivery of equipment through 2027 aligns with Samsung’s timeline for the iPhone 18.
