Apple is reportedly planning to reduce production of its newly launched iPhone Air, according to the Japanese investment firm Mizuho Securities. This was first reported by Korean news outlet The Elec. The report suggests that Apple will trim output of the iPhone Air by roughly one million units this year, even as the company ramps up production of other iPhone 17 models that appear to be outperforming expectations.
According to Mizuho’s supply-chain estimates, Apple intends to increase production of the standard iPhone 17 by about two million units, the iPhone 17 Pro by one million, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max by four million. Altogether, the total iPhone 17 lineup production forecast is said to rise from around 88 million to 94 million units for the year. The iPhone Air, by contrast, is seeing reduced orders — an early sign that it may not be resonating as strongly with consumers.
The iPhone Air was introduced as a lighter, thinner alternative to the standard iPhone, designed to bridge the gap between affordability and premium design. However, market response appears mixed. Analysts believe the model’s positioning — priced above the base iPhone 17 yet offering fewer advanced features than the Pro versions — may have left it in a difficult middle ground. Some customers see it as lacking the value of the regular iPhone 17, while others view it as too limited compared to the Pro lineup.
In certain regions, such as China, the iPhone Air drew significant attention and even sold out quickly during its launch window. But in Western markets, reports suggest the enthusiasm has been more muted. This uneven global reception could explain Apple’s reported decision to rebalance production toward higher-demand models.
Whether the iPhone Air makes a comeback next year or fades quietly into the background may depend on how Apple adapts its design and pricing to better capture its target audience.
