Apple’s new M5 Vision Pro is being Produced in Vietnam

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple’s M5 Vision Pro headset, which goes on sale this Wednesday, is assembled in Vietnam rather than China.

The original Vision Pro, launched in February 2024 with the M2 processor, was built in China by Luxshare Precision Industry Co., a long-time Apple supplier also responsible for manufacturing AirPods. The move to Vietnam is a clear sign that Apple is accelerating its effort to diversify production away from China, even for lower-volume products like the Vision Pro.

Apple continues to make most iPhones in China, but much of the production destined for the U.S. market has already shifted elsewhere. Earlier this year, Apple moved the majority of U.S.-bound iPhone production to India—a move intended to sidestep tariffs on Chinese goods introduced under former President Donald Trump’s trade policies.

Vietnam has steadily become one of Apple’s most important manufacturing centers outside China. The country already produces AirPods, Apple Watches, and even some iPads and HomePods.

Bloomberg’s report also noted that Apple plans to build its next generation of smart home devices in Vietnam, including a smart display, an indoor security camera, and a tabletop robot. Additionally, Apple has increased Mac production in Thailand and Malaysia, and earlier this year struck a deal with Indonesia to produce mesh components for AirPods Max.

However, not all Vision Pro-related accessories have made the same transition. The new Dual Knit headband, when purchased separately, is still labeled as “Made in China.”

Apple’s growing presence in countries like Vietnam and India highlights its ongoing balancing act—maintaining relationships with the Chinese government while navigating the realities of global trade tensions and tariffs.

China remains critical to Apple’s operations, but with rising geopolitical risks and supply chain vulnerabilities exposed during the pandemic, Apple’s multi-country manufacturing strategy has become a long-term necessity rather than a backup plan.
