Apple F1 Broadcasting Partnership

In an interview on CNBC’s Money Movers, Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang revealed that the relationship between Apple and Formula 1 is rapidly evolving. While Apple has already secured a five-year deal to stream races, Chang’s comments suggest the tech giant has much larger ambitions. It appears discussions are already underway to expand the partnership on “multiple fronts.”

The most exciting takeaway for international fans is the potential for a worldwide broadcasting deal. When asked if Apple might pursue global streaming rights in the future, Chang didn’t hesitate, predicting that Apple will be “very active” in that space. Currently, Apple holds F1 broadcasting rights only for the U.S., but a global pass could unify the experience, similar to their success with MLS Season Pass. While Chang noted it is “still very early,” the intent to broaden the scope seems clear.

Beyond just buying rights, Apple is looking to fundamentally change how we consume the sport. Chang emphasized that the media landscape has shifted from a simple Sunday broadcast window to an “always on” experience. He believes Apple’s technology will “really enhance the product,” driving brand awareness in ways traditional broadcasters can’t. This aligns perfectly with Apple’s strategy of using ecosystem integration—potentially through Vision Pro or advanced real-time data on Apple TV—to offer something unique.

A major catalyst for this deepening relationship is undoubtedly the success of F1 The Movie. Chang highlighted the film’s massive box office performance and confirmed it will make its streaming debut on Apple TV on December 12. The movie hasn’t just entertained; it has brought in a wave of new fans and energized existing ones. This cultural momentum is providing the perfect slipstream for Apple to make its move into the live sporting side of the business.
