Satellite Messaging Now Available for iPhone and Apple Watch Users in Japan

Apple announced this week announced in a press release, that Message via Satellite is available in Japan for users with an iPhone 14 or later or an Apple Watch Ultra 3. This feature is designed to help users stay connected with family and friends even when they are outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

When a user attempts to send a message outside of traditional coverage, Message via Satellite automatically prompts the iPhone or Apple Watch to connect to the nearest satellite. Connection cues are immediately accessible from the device’s lock screen, Apple Watch display, or the Messages app.

Once connected, users can send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks via iMessage and SMS. iMessages sent through the satellite network feature built-in privacy, as they are end-to-end encrypted.

In-Depth Connection Guidance

The feature provides an integrated satellite demo, allowing users to familiarize themselves with connecting their iPhone or Apple Watch to a satellite. On compatible iPhone models, the Dynamic Island displays the strength of the satellite connection. If needed, the device will guide the user to face left or right to optimize the connection.

Expanding Satellite Services in Japan

The introduction of Message via Satellite complements existing satellite safety services already available in Japan.

These existing features include:

  • Emergency SOS via Satellite: Intended for users encountering emergencies in areas without cell service, this allows them to text emergency services and notify their emergency contacts.

  • Find My via Satellite: This enables users to share their location with friends and family.

Message via Satellite joins these services, further enhancing user communication and safety across the region.
