According to a new leak from tipster Ice Universe on X, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are set to feature a significantly smaller display cutout, marking the first major hardware redesign of the Dynamic Island since its debut on the iPhone 14 Pro. The current Dynamic Island width, which has remained a standard 20.76 mm through the iPhone 17 series, is reportedly shrinking down to just 13.49 mm. That is an approximate 35% reduction in horizontal footprint, giving users back a noticeable chunk of screen real estate for status bar icons and content.

For years, rumors have swirled about Apple’s mission to hide Face ID components beneath the glass. It appears the iPhone 18 Pro will finally move the infrared flood illuminator—a key part of the TrueDepth camera system—under the display. By tucking one of the largest sensors behind the pixels, Apple can keep the Face ID security we love while minimizing the physical pill required to house the remaining selfie camera and dot projector.

To put this into perspective, the Dynamic Island has been the dominant face of the iPhone for four generations. This change will make the iPhone 18 Pro look distinctly more modern than its predecessors. This ultra-compact Dynamic Island is expected to be exclusive to the Pro models.
